Osteopathy For Sports Injuries

We are all very interested in treating patients with sports injuries. Individually we all place great importance on maintaining personal fitness and therefore have developed a special interest in treating such patients. We enjoy helping patients to recover optimally from injury and importantly helping them to strengthen and prevent further injury.

WHY DO SPORTS INJURIES DEVELOP?:

Sports injuries can develop under many different circumstances. Acute injuries can be instantaneous and chronic can develop over a period of time. Whatever the type of injury, there are usually a few contributing factors. These may include joint stiffness or hypermobility, postural imbalance, muscle weakness / imbalance, core weakness or muscle tightness (hypertonicity).

By targeting these issues prior to starting a new sports or fitness regime or even a few weeks leading up to the start of a new sporting season, osteopathic treatment can help to prevent sports injuries from occurring. This is especially pertinent if you have a history of sporting injuries.

HOW CAN OSTEOPATHIC TREATMENT HELP?:

Osteopathic treatment is aimed at the whole body so rather than only focusing on the site of pain or discomfort we look at the whole. The reason is that a shoulder injury may develop because of stiffness in the upper back (thoracic spine and ribcage). Due to reduced mobility in the back, the tendons may overstretch to compensate which may lead to a rotator cuff injury. The problem may even start from lower down such as in the lower back, and therefore treating only the shoulder may mean that the shoulder may injure again if the causative or contributing factors are not addressed.

WHAT KIND OF TREATMENT DO OSTEOPATHS USE WHEN TREATING SPORTS INJURIES?

We use soft tissue techniques, specific joint mobilisation, articulatory techniques, dry needling and muscle energy techniques. We may also use cranial or biodynamics where required. We will also advise on the appropriate stretching and strengthening exercises to do to help recovery and also prevent further injury.

WHAT KIND OF SPORTS INJURIES DO OSTEOPATHS TREAT?

At both clinics in Gardenvale and Kew, sports injuries are an increasing complaint we see in patients.

The type of sports injuries we treat are extensive, including but not limited to the following:

DO WE TREAT CHILDREN WITH SPORTING INJURIES?

Of course! Children can experience sporting injuries of a different kind due to growing at different rates and playing sports whilst this is happening. While the bones are growing, more strain can occur on ligaments and tendons and ligaments.

Conditions that children may develop include:

  • Sever’s Disease
  • Osgood Schlatter’s Disease
  • Sprains, strains

It is very important for children to warm up and warm down appropriately and keep well hydrated. Our team of osteopaths can confidently assess and appropriately treat children of all ages and also advise on correct exercise.
