Osteopathy for pregnancy

Osteopathy is safe during pregnancy and is beneficial and effective for pregnant women. Techniques chosen in the treatment will be safe and comfortable for both the mother and growing baby. During pregnancy there are obviously big physical and hormonal changes. There is a change in your body’s centre of gravity and softening of ligaments which can lead to problems like sciatica, osteitis pubis, mid back pain and headaches. Osteopathic care can help with pelvic alignment and help your body be in optimal health physically to allow you to have a successful birth.

Osteopaths can assess and help with pregnancy associated complaints such as:

  • Lower back pain and sciatica
  • Tingling in legs / feet / arms / hands
  • Aching shoulders and mid back
  • Headaches
  • Poor sleep
  • Incontinence

Osteopathy for babies and children

Osteopathic treatment is especially suited to babies and children. We use cranial or biodynamic treatment (in addition to more direct techniques when required). Prior to the treatment, a comprehensive history and examination will be done to determine which kind of treatment is best suited.

Treatment of babies
Babies may have had trauma through childbirth which may contribute to problems such as colic and constipation, feeding difficulties, plagiocephaly (misshapen or flat head) or reflux.

Treatment of children / teenagers
Children’s bodies go through very rapid changes when they grow from babies through to teenage years. These changes can place excessive stress on the body and can affect growth and development. Osteopaths can help with alignment and overall body health by treating children who have postural strains, sporting injuries, growth related strains or children who have had accidents or falls. It is also beneficial to bring you child for treatment when they are having a growth spurt so we can help the child grow as optimally as possible by taking strain off areas in the body which may be susceptible.

Treatment techniques we use


Soft tissue techniques
Soft tissue massage and stretching – can be varied in pressure depending on the area and diagnosis. The aim of these techniques is to increase blood flow to the area and therefore improve healing, increase range in the muscles being treated and reducing tightness and restriction which may be contributing to the injury / pain.

Articulatory techniques
Joint articulation is the passive movement of joints through their range of motion. The patient relaxes during this technique and the aim is to increase the range of movement in the joint or joint complex and is very gentle.

Muscle energy technique
These techniques involve patient participation, whereby the practitioner localises the joint restriction and the patient then gently pushes against the practitioner to pull the joint specifically through the restriction.

Specific joint manipulation (HVLA)
This technique is specific and used with only the exact force required to move the joint through it’s range of restriction. The aim is to restore optimal movement into the joint. There may be an audible ‘click’ associated with this technique.

Why do we hear a click / pop when a joint is manipulated using HVLA (high velocity, low amplitude thrust)?

Surrounding each joint there is a synovial capsule and within it synovial fluid. Within this fluid there is carbon dioxide and other gases dissolved. If the volume in this space is changed (which happens when the joint is manipulated), the body has to change gas in solution to a free gas to maintain pressure volume relationships. The pop can only be heard again after a period of 20 minutes or so because the gas must go into solution again.

Dry Needling
This technique uses a fine filament needle to release tight muscles, particularly trigger points. The goal is to permanently reduce muscle pain and dysfunction. The needle used is very thin, and most people do not even feel the needle penetrating the skin. The only pain felt may be a reproduction of the patient’s symptoms which is positive as it often results in a deactivation of the trigger point and helps in restoring the muscles normal length by reducing tightness in the area.

Visceral Osteopathy
This is the treatment of organs in the body. Organs within each cavity of the body are able to move freely against each other due to the slippery (serous) membranes they are enveloped in. These membranes slide against each other allowing each organ to move freely and function optimally. When there is pathology in an organ, there may be ‘visceral restriction’ which can cause a functional problem or even structural problem. Osteopathic treatment of the viscera can help to reduce restrictions, increase mobility and subsequently help with function and structure.

Cranial Osteopathy
Developed by Osteopath, William Garner Sutherland, D.O., D.Sc (Hons) (1873-1954). He was a student of Dr Andrew Taylor Still (founder of osteopathy) and was the first to discover a subtle movement between the bones of the cranium (skull). This was found through years of observation and palpation. The subtle movement (cranial rhythm) which can be felt by trained osteopaths in this field is called Primary Respiration or the Involuntary Motion. This rhythmic movement is expressed throughout the body’s tissues so contrary to the term “cranial”, the osteopath can use this type of treatment on any part of the body. The strength and quality of the involuntary motion can be palpated by the osteopath which can be used to indicate the health of the body’s tissues. In addition to this, strains can be felt in the fluid, membranes, and other soft tissues. The osteopath can then use very gentle techniques to help correct these strains which will also improve the involuntary motion throughout the body.

Cranial osteopathy is a type of osteopathic treatment and can be used on it’s own in a treatment session or as part of a wide range of techniques. Cranial will be chosen like any other technique if deemed appropriate and beneficial for the patient.

During this treatment technique, the patient may not be aware of much happening, or they may feel relaxed, decrease in painful symptoms or increase in circulation. Most people do feel very relaxed during the treatment. If they have had cranial treatment before they may be attuned to the subtlety of it and can be very much aware of the changes taking place in their body. In the hours or days following the treatment the patient may feel most of the benefits of the treatment. The treatment is very subtle compared with other techniques an osteopath might use.

Biodynamic Osteopathy
Biodynamic osteopathy was developed by an American osteopath, Dr James Jealous. Using Dr William Sutherland’s teachings in addition to work from German embryologist Dr Erich Blechschmidt (1904-1992), he worked on the idea that the human body has a perfect blueprint which is that of the embryo we developed from. This blueprint is what he refers to as ‘The Health’. The Health is present in all of us and this type of treatment aims to bring our bodies back to this blueprint as much as possible. In all other osteopathic treatment techniques the practitioner applies a force to correct a lesion. In biodynamic osteopathy the treatment comes from ‘The Health’ without the practitioner applying external forces but by being aware and allowing the treatment to take place.

Biodynamic Osteopathy is the most gentle of osteopathic treatment techniques and is particularly suited to babies, children, the elderly and anyone who prefers this approach.

Posture Control Insoles® represent a paradigm shift in improving foot function to improve posture and overcome musculoskeletal pain and problems. The value of creating expensive custom orthotics that basically fill real or perceived voids underneath the feet to push the feet into a more desirable static position is increasingly questioned. It has even been documented (Fusco, Italy) that this approach may even contribute toward destabilising the musculoskeletal system. The new paradigm recognises the vital influence of the neuromuscular system.

Information from the mechano-receptors in the forefeet is processed and returned to the muscles that control the feet, stability, posture and motion. The new paradigm recognises that the rear foot is controlled by forefoot and that a positive contact with the ground is preferable to the feet being isolated from sensory input with rigid or semi-rigid orthotics. The era of mechanical evaluations and passive posting (arch supports and shims) has been surpassed.

Posture Control Insoles® are designed to cause your muscles to facilitate foot correction for hyperpronation and supination. Foot mechanics, gait and posture are corrected naturally. Your feet and your body are strengthened by free natural motion rather than weakened by restricted motion as is the case with traditional arch supports.

Posture Control Insoles® deploy a forefoot technology (Medial Column Technology®) that provides sensory feedback to the first metatarsal and big toe. The remainder of the insole is flat and ultra thin to fit in any shoe. It is so thin it can be slipped underneath the sock-liner of an athletic shoe. 100% natural motion leads to 100% comfort. Contrary to some opinions, Posture Control Insoles® do not cause Hallux Limitus. There is really no comparison between our product – Posture Control Insoles® - and orthotics. Traditional orthotics and shoe inserts are inseparable from arch supports, heel posts, heel cups and cushion.

If you haven’t had much exposure to orthotics here is a quick review: The key elements of standard orthotics whether 3/4 or full length are arch supports and heel cups. Conventional wisdom professes that you can control hyper-pronation by supporting the arch with an arch support and reduce hyper-mobility of the heel by placing it in a heel cup. This works quite well so long as you stand still, and that’s the problem. They don’t work nearly as well for active people. Active people walk and run; they bend and are on their toes. When your weight is on your forefoot or when you are on your toes, your weight is not on the orthotic. It is recognised that traditional orthotics immobilise the foot. The collapsed arch is simply supported in place. The muscles capable of controlling the arch are no longer being challenged to work and they atrophy. Instead of becoming stronger and healthier, the foot becomes weaker. So fitting someone who has functional arches with arch supports seems as unreasonable as fitting a neck brace on someone who has a sore neck.

Posture Control Insoles® control hyperpronation from the forefoot, and that is an important difference because the forefoot is always on the ground when the foot tries to hyper-pronate. This is why Posture Control Insoles® effectively control hyper-pronation through the complete gait cycle.

Posture Control Insoles® can be fit with arch supports, but we generally recommend them only for people with flexible flat feet, and we use a mild amount to facilitate the transfer vector forces across the longitudinal arch. Heel lifts may also be used with Posture Control Insoles® to offset for physical leg length differences. They may also be used symmetrically for extra cushioning or to alleviate Achilles pain. We do not offer and do not recommend medial heel posts be used at all with normal hyperpronating feet. A medial heel post effectively elevates the first metatarsal further and does not decrease hyper-pronation during walking or running.
